MEET THE EXPERTS
Mike Major

Acoustic Designer
Mike has been involved in nearly every facet of pro audio since 1987. He started working in live sound, somewhat by accident, and quickly found his way into the recording studio. He was a live sound technician at South Coast Audio and concurrently ran Rosewood Studio in El Paso Texas for 18 years. During that time, he worked with hundreds of touring acts in the live world, while helping define the sound of the indy/punk/heavy rock music scene in El Paso. He was an early part of At The Drive-In’s career and became a constant collaborator with Sparta throughout their career. Mike eventually left El Paso and Rosewood studio and started mixing at home where he worked with numerous other bands, including Coheed and Cambria and As Tall As Lions.
Due to his life-long focus on the difficult but important task of recording drums, Mike wrote the book Recording Drums: The Complete Guide which was released in 2012.
Throughout his time in studios, Mike was always fascinated by acoustics and how sound behaved in rooms. His early motivation was simply to make his studio sound better and to fully understand what was happening in a room while recording. Driven to learn more (in the pre-internet days) he pored over books about acoustics and experimented with building projects in an attempt to understand what worked and what didn't. Industry friends would seek his help in solving their acoustic problems which started yet another “career” of sorts. That fascination about acoustics continues to this day.
Mike has been with GIK since 2018 and loves to get involved in the most complicated projects. He applies what he's learned throughout the years in pro audio to offer an experiential perspective to his customers' projects. He fully understands their focus and their goals, and knows how to achieve what is needed to work efficiently and effectively.
